History
The origin of Howland Community Church dates back to 1830, when a group of township residents left The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Warren and chartered a congregation in Howland. The first building was located at the junction of Mines Road and Youngstown Road, in front of what is now the Eastwood Mall. In 1861, the congregation purchased property at the current site, closer to the center of the township. Until 1948, our congregation was known as Howland Christian Church. In that year, we became charter members of the International Council of Community Churches and changed our name to reflect our ecumenical and inclusive approach to church life. Our wider church relationship is shared with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the International Council and as of 1979, with the United Church of Christ.
